Australian alcohol guidelines (issued by national health and medical research council) recommend men and women drink no more than two standard drinks on any one day to reduce health risks over their life time. They also recommend drinking no more than four drinks on any single occasion to reduce risk of alcohol related injury. However, not all drinks were created equal, especial when it comes to what constitutes as a standard drink. For example some restaurant wine glasses now hold up to two standard drinks. To help you choose the smartest choice, keep in mind the following:
One 375ml bottle of full strength beer
(4% alcohol volume) contains 1.4 standard drinks
One 750ml bottle of red wine
(13% alcohol volume) contains 7.7 standard drinks
One 750ml bottle of champagne
(12% alcohol volume) contains 7.1 standard drinks
One 330ml bottle of full strength mixed drink
(7% alcohol volume), such as Bacardi Breezer or Smirnoff Twist, contains 1.8 standard drinks
A 30ml nip (shot) of spirits
(40% alcohol volume) contains one standard drink. A cocktail may have two different spirits
